This year, we’re not giving thanks for a new Rihanna studio
album, but to tide us over, the Barbados-born pop star turned
fashion mogul has gifted the world with an exclusive
behind-the-scenes look at her life, in a weighty 500-page visual
autobiography.
Why opt for images to tell the story of her fabulous life? At
the party for the book release (held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim
Museum), she told WWD: “I don’t got time for a
memoir.”
It’s certainly believable, based on the jam-packed schedule she
appears to keep, beginning at a young age when she was discovered
performing in Barbados and continuing nonstop with chart-topping
studio albums, concert tours, and an extremely successful recent
foray into the fashion and beauty industries.
But lately, she has found time to take in some art as well: the
star was spotted at Art Basel in Switzerland in June and Frieze
London in October. (Her boyfriend, Saudi
businessman Hassan Jameel, has art connections also: his
family is behind Dubai’s Jameel Arts Centre.) So perhaps its not
surprising that her visual autobiography would be published by
Phaidon, the bookmaker behind monographs for such cultural titans
as Le Corbusier, Agnes Martin, and Bruce Nauman.

The book, in its standard issue, will run you $150. But the pop
star also collaborated with design duo the Haas Brothers on three
limited edition stands, so you can display your Rihanna book like
the work of art it truly is. The “Rihanna: Fenty x Phaidon” edition
comes with a “This Shit Is Heavy” stand, modeled after the star’s
own tattooed hands for $175; the “Rihanna: Luxury Supreme” edition
features a Drippy and the Brain gold bookstand and is
signed by the designers and Rihanna (available for $5,500); and the
“Rihanna: Ultra Luxury Supreme” edition is a black-covered book set
atop the Haas Brothers’ Stoner marble stand
($75,000—and also, miraculously, sold out).
If you can’t afford a limited edition stand (or a $150 book),
get a taste of the photographs from “Rihanna” below.
